WHY I WRITE
“I’m a Chicago native, creative, poet, and performer; utilizing writing as a tool to explore the experience of Blackness in the realms of love, sisterhood, mortality, and legacy in an attempt to speak with readers about the possibility that still exists in the midst of the complexities of race, gender, and personhood. It is through my work that I hope to give others the courage to not only value and be curious about their own stories, but to give them the courage to find sameness and community in the stories of others. Although the meaning of poetry and art is ever changing for me, I am always certain of the privilege that is to continuously find freedom with paper and a pen.
I'm adopted, and before giving me away my birthmother asked both God and my parents to make sure that I'd learn how to read and write. Regardless of what you may or may not believe in, I hope that you recognize how powerful that is; that I naturally fell in love with what my birthmother did not have the resources or support system to be able to do herself. Knowing how to write is a privilege that will continuously motivate me to become more raw, innovative, and dedicated to my craft." - Angelica
